Meta has announced it will discontinue support for end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for Instagram direct messages after May 8, 2026. Users affected by this change will be guided on how to download media and messages they wish to keep. Updating to the latest Instagram version may be required for this process.
Reason Behind the Decision
Meta explained that few users opted into encrypted messaging on Instagram DMs, prompting the company to remove the feature. Users who still want end-to-end encrypted messaging are encouraged to use WhatsApp, which continues to support E2EE.
The feature was first introduced in 2021 as part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s privacy-focused vision. Initially, it was limited to specific regions and not enabled by default. During the early weeks of the Russo-Ukrainian war in 2022, encrypted messaging was made available to all adult users in both countries.
Privacy vs. Security Debate
End-to-end encryption is celebrated for protecting privacy, ensuring that only the communicating users can access the content, and blocking service providers, hackers, and third parties from intercepting messages.
However, critics argue that E2EE can also shield criminal activity, making it harder for law enforcement to investigate illegal content such as child sexual abuse material (CSAM) or terrorist communications. This challenge is often referred to as the “Going Dark” problem.
Regulatory Outlook
The European Commission is expected to release a Technology Roadmap on encryption in 2026. This initiative aims to explore solutions that allow lawful access to encrypted data for law enforcement while maintaining cybersecurity and protecting fundamental rights.
